Proposal

“I’m home!” Madison called out as she entered her house. She bent down to unlace her shoes, focusing on the knots of the laces. “You wouldn’t believe what a day I’ve had, Mom, this group of merchants came in and ordered about thirty plates of spiced potatoes, so I told them they’d have to wait for their order.” She kicked off her boots and straightened up, walking into the kitchen. “So they started yelling, and- Oh!” She stopped, startled by the sight of her girlfriend at the kitchen table. Her mother was sitting across from Enna, holding a cup of tea in both hands, and both of them were smiling awkwardly at her. Madison got the impression that she had walked in on something she wasn’t supposed to see. Also, she had never seen Enna talk to her mom for more than five minutes before, but from the looks of the half-finished teacups they both had in front of them they’d been there for a while.

“Hey babe,” Enna managed, forcing the least convincing smile she’d seen in her life. Her leg was jittering under the table and her hands were laid flat on her thighs. Was she… nervous? Madison had never seen her girlfriend nervous in her entire life, so she had no reference for what that emotion would look like on her, but the way Enna was grimacing at her was pretty clearly some sort of discomfort. It was either that or she had gas.

“Enna and I were just… talking!” Her mother was a better liar than Enna was, but Madison had been taking care of the woman for nearly a decade now, so she knew her moods a lot better. Her mom didn’t seem upset- thank the gods, she loved her girlfriend very much but she had a tendency to put her foot in her mouth- but she did seem… apprehensive maybe? What the nine hells was going on.

Madison had always believed in being direct and vocalizing her emotions. There wasn’t a lot of point in fucking around now that she and her girlfriend were both legendary heroes of the realm. “No offense, but something is clearly going on. What are you two up to?”

Enna stood up from her chair and took a step towards her. “Your mom and I were… talking,” she said, rubbing the back of her neck awkwardly, “about, uhhh. If it was okay if, maybe, I could have something of yours. Something I’ve wanted for a long time.”

“Huh?” Madison squinted at Enna, trying to figure out what the fuck she was talking about. Something of hers? Enna was as rich as a god, what could she want that Madison had? Was it… was it a metaphor? Was Enna trying to be abstract?

“Yeah, um, I was wondering if I could maybe have-” Enna reached into her pocket, fumbling with something, and Madison was more confused than ever. Then Enna dropped to one knee.

“Could I have your last name?”

Enna was kneeling on the floor in front of her, in her house. There was a ring in Enna’s hand. Enna was smiling at her again, less nervous now, softer, like the look she gave Madison when she thought she was sleeping. Her mom was sitting at the table, tears shining in her eyes. And before she knew it, Madison was crying too. She nodded, unable to make words happen, and flung her arms around Enna’s neck. Enna brought her arms up to hold Madison to her and buried her face in Madison’s neck. Madison felt a damp spot on her shoulder, and realized that Enna was crying too. Madison pulled back from the embrace, but only long enough to line her face up with Enna’s and kiss her over and over again. She was laughing through her tears, and she didn’t realize until Enna grunted and leaned forward that her knees had given out. Enna scooped her up in a bridal carry (!!!!!) and kissed her on the forehead before placing her gently on a chair. Then she got to one knee again and offered the ring.

“Is that a yes?”

Madison, nodded, wiping her eyes on her apron and slipping the ring on her finger. “Yes, yes, of course, I love you so much- oh, wait.” She smiled at Enna, remembering. “Can you do me one favor first?” Enna’s brow furrowed as she nodded. “Of course! Anything for you, I love you too, you’re the light of my life and-” She was cut off as Madison laughed and leaned down to kiss her again. “I just need you to do one thing for me.” Her grin turned wicked. “Tell Gretchen she owes me twenty gold.” Enna blinked, and then Madison saw realization dawn on her face, and she started laughing so hard she almost fell over. “Babe, did you have a betting pool on whether I would propose to you?” Madison tried (unsuccessfully) to organize her face into an expression of innocence. “What? No, this is completely unrelated, I would never-” Enna surged forward, kissing her again, and smiled back at her. “I am going to marry you so hard.”
